tips for quilt labels

Creating the quilt label can be a quick, easy and fun part of making your quilt. You can handwrite your quilt labels with a permanent pigment pen, embroider by hand or machine, or even print them out on printable fabric sheets on your home computer and inkjet printer. Just for fun, try embellishing the label with a bit of fusible appliqué or hand embroidery.

If you’d like to try handwriting your quilt labels, here are some tips for you:

1). Practice on a piece of paper cut to size first. This way you’ll know how large or small to make your letters so everything fits.

2). Iron a piece of freezer paper to the back of your fabric label to make writing on fabric easier.

3). Use an air erasable pen and ruler to make removable lines for writing on.

Besides putting the quilt’s name, your name, and date, here are some other things to consider including on your quilt label:

1). A phone number or email address in case your quilt gets lost

2). A short story about the quilt for future generations

3). A short note or dedication to the recipient

4). Washing instructions

On May 17 Citrus Belt Quilters held their 2008 Quilt Festival and Vintage Home Tour. Here are a few highlights from the quilts displayed in Smiley Park, Redlands, CA. As you can see it was a gorgeous day. These four quilts all happened to have such charming labels on the back I wanted to share them here with you as well as the beautiful fronts.
