Pocket Full of Posies quilt block

Here’s my block,#41: Pocket Full of Posies. It’s a fun block, combining simple piecing with paper piecing, applique and button embellishment. This block would look great in many different color palettes. Here I’ve used one of my all-time favorite palettes: black & white with brights.

The centers of the flowers are 30 mm Kurumi cover buttons. If you’ve never tried Kurumi buttons, they’re great for making easy perfect dimensional circles. You could also substitute a regular circle of fusible-backed fabric or a yo-yo for the flower centers. Use your imagination and have fun!

kurumi-step-by-stepWondering how to use a Kurumi button? It’s easy!

1. Cut out a circle of fabric a bit larger than your button.

2. Sew a running stitch all the way around the edge as if you’re making a fabric yo-yo.

3. Gather the circle of fabric around the Kurumi button and tie a knot.

Voila! Now just hand applique your covered Kurumi button to your quilt block with matching thread.

  1. Laura, your block is so cute! I might just have to finally try applique. My favorite colors are purple and orange and one of these days, together they will be!

  2. Normally I like scrappy quilts but I’ve been really intrigued this yearby all the “winter” themed fabric lines with the colors cream, ice blue, olive, red, brown. They really capture the feel of the season.

  3. Red, red and anything that goes with red. :-) Ok, not exactly a “palette” but I guess my favorite color is clear. I love the fabric you chose for the basket on your block.

  4. Your right, I do have too many favourites. Might depend on the quilt in question, or the mood. At present I am collecting 1930′s and black and whites, and am making a quilt with greens/golds etc in it.

  5. that is too cute! perfect for my girls bedroom. I have quilt ideas already for their beds (both “big girl and toddler” and “two big girl” but for now one’s in a crib the other in the big girl bed and shes using a quilt my mom made me for college) but that block would make a great decoration. Their walls are bare!

  6. Congratulations! What a fun block!

In most of my life I love earthy, organic color palettes but when it comes to fabric I love it all, with purples/blues getting picked the most.

  7. My favorite color palette? Oh, definitely earthy colors! They’re nice and warm, cuddly and inviting. What a cute pattern! Nice button thingys, too.

  8. Favorite color palette — blue and yellow, with a splash of crisp white.
You have a wonderful website – I have bookmarked it.
    Thanks!

  9. I love the Kurumi cover buttons, I have never heard of them but definitely want to find them to work with! They really look wonderful on your beautiful block! Thanks so much!

  10. This is a cute block and changing fabrics could give so many kinds of looks. I love greens with pinks or reds with yellow or gold. Your book looks exciting too!

  11. What a charming block! I love the name, too. Both the block and title are reminiscent of childhood–especially the block for its carefree design and cheerful bright colors.
My favorite color palette honestly changes with the seasons. For this time of year, it’s tan, barn red or rust, deep navy and forest green.

  12. I *love* those buttons! Thank you so much for sharing them with us!

My favorite colors right now are brights, especially bright batiks. Green & blue in particular.

  13. I love the idea of using the Kurumi cover buttons for the flower centers. I’m not fond of making yo-yo’s and the ‘fail-proof’ gadget for making ‘perfect circles’ gave me raisins instead of grapes….I will be trying this method of yours! I also like the idea of getting more dimension by using the cover buttons. Thanks!

  14. I love your block and fabrics that were used! I would love to be entered into your give-a-way! All shades of teal and blue green are my favs.
