muse monday: inspiration in your stash

I’ve been reorganizing my stash this summer (translation: take all the fabric down from the shelves, throw it in a big heap and then fold them nicely one by one and put them back all neatly organized.) So I was somewhat surprised when out of a pile somewhat like this …
… came this yummy mixed berry palette. (They really did land in that pile together from that boysenberry purple all the way to the blue raspberry blue. I wasn’t trying to pick fabrics for a new quilt, I was trying to put them away.)
OK, well blue raspberry isn’t really be a true berry (shhh … don’t tell my DD!) but oooh, those fabrics would make a delicious quilt.
Have you ever mixed up your fabrics just to see what would happen? It might be just the way to discover a fab new color combination, after all, your stash is personally handpicked by you. Some of those fabrics you never would put side-by-side are bound to look great together.
By the way, here’s a peek at how the rearranging is going so far … if I can just keep my mind on folding and stacking I can finish up the rest that are still piled on the floor!

Rearranging your stash can lead to a great new quilt! Looks like you are having a fantastic time! Love the berry comparison.

I did some rearranging at the beginning of the summer and it has made the space so much more inviting. I am sure you will find the same thing.
You came up with a lovely combination- it will be fun to see what quilt you come up with using the berry fabrics …Yummy I'm sure.
    Warmest regards,

I love your stash. The organization picture is gorgeous. Looks like a quilt store…that's what my girls would say! If I am sewing, they are usually pretending that they work with me at my quilt shop…or pretend we are all working together at JoAnns..guess that means I go there too much?!?!

Oh, how I wish my huge stash was this organized (groan)! I was just telling my Mom today that soon, very soon, I will downsize.

Wow! As a newbie quilter (and blogger) I am in awe of your 'stash'. How do you go about accumulating so many lovely fabrics (e.g do you buy by color?) and when you see something in the store that you love how much do you usually purchase? Happy organizing!!

    Hi Denise,

Thanks! It took years and years of fabric shopping to create my stash. Actually I do buy by color a lot of the time, but I don't restrict myself only to color shopping if there's something else I really love. I always check out the oranges and yellows, because they're usually harder to find than the other colors. Taupe seems to be another rare color, at least at my local shops. Today I went fabric shopping and there were only 2 or 3 fabrics in the whole store that could really be called taupe. Most of the neutrals are beige.

Most of my quilts are small and scrappy so 1/2 or 1/3 of a yard of each or even a fat quarter is usually enough for me. I rarely buy more than 1 yard lengths.

Oh how I envy your stash! I am still working on putting together my stash… I have a measly 7 pieces! ;)

    Hi Jordan,
Be patient … everybody's stash starts out small like that, even mine. Someday your stash will be the envy of any quilter.
