I’ve never tried a 6-pointed star by machine, but I really like the control you get from hand-piecing. I would recommend finding a class or book on hand-piecing, if possible. If you want to draft a pattern for a 6-pointed star, you’ll need to draw a diamond shape with 30 and 60 degree corners, then add your 1/4 seam allowance. The sides of my template are 2-7/8″, all 4 sides equal in length. This star finishes at about 7-3/4″ from point to point. See the stars coming together here.
