At Moonlighters last week Maralyn Stocker gave a presentation on molas. They are made by the Kuna women of Panama. Bright and cheery, they make the best eye candy! Here are a couple for your enjoyment:

Those are spectacular molas! It’s a beautiful art form. I lived in Panama for awhile growing up and my parents were kind enough to buy a mola for each of the kids. The best information I have found about the details of making them is on Charlotte Patera’s website (www her name with no spaces dot com — don’t want to write it out because sometimes a url won’t post).
Hi Cheri,
Thanks! I went to Charlotte Patera’s website to check it out (I’d love to actually make one someday) and add her site to my list of links, but low and behold it was one that was already there, so I added her name to the link.

These are gorgeous. I love that alligator creature especially.
ooooh, i love these molas! how colorful! thanks for sharing. i also like your blog layout, how everything is spaced. and i like the artquilt that is on the top in the box below the header. did you make that? i’m just blog surfing so i’ve only gotten down to the mola posts so far but i’ll try to read further and see if you mention anything about the artquilt.
Hi Leah,
Welcome and thanks for stopping by!
Yes, I made that art quilt, “Penny for a spool of thread”. You can read more about it in my February 4, 2007 post, http://quilting-diva.blogspot.com/2007/02/penny-for-spool-of-thread-i.html
