Here’s my latest design in the basket series, Crazy for Baskets. It’s approximately 58×65 inches. I don’t know how I’m ever going to quilt it. That might not be a big deal to most of you, but I’m used to 12 inch mini quilts that fit quite neatly in the sewing machine. Just this morning I worked on quilting a piece that was about 8×10 inches. For those of you who machine quilt on a regular machine, can you recommend the best way to manage it? Rolling? Folding? Smashing?
Check back later this week. I’m going to post the pattern for the block and the instructions for the quilt on the CBQ website. This is a really fun, easygoing introduction to paper foundation piecing, and if a piece or two of fabric comes up short, no need to tear out all those tiny stitches, just add another piece.
happy quilting!
I roll and smush. I spray or pin baste, then do stitch in the ditch where I can. After that, the pins come out and things stay in place while you do the ‘real’ quilting, no matter whether you fold, roll, or smush. Some people on a list I’m on baste with water-soluble thread and they say things stay together very well during the quilting. For me, the hardest part is supporting the weight of the quilt. I use a big table, my shoulders (!), and on my right side an ironing board adjusted to sewing table height. Good luck!
I love the lopped off baskets and white space; they make the quilt so interesting!
Great quilt. Thanks for the lovely comment on my blog.
And congrats on both you and your quilt going to Houston.
I use lots of safety pins, and if I don’t put in an anchor row of SID, I like to baste with water soluable thread. Rolling works great if you do a grid pattern with a walking foot, but for free motion, I sort of scrunch. You do need a LARGE space to support the weight. Good luck.
Darling quilt! It’s gonna be a winner!
I start out rolled but it isn’t long before it’s smushed. Expect your shoulders to get tired the first day, so take frequent breaks and raise the height of your seat if you can. It helps. If you don’t have those gloves with the sticky fingers, you should get some.
I quilt by hand. It takes forever but I have no patience with all that rolling and shoving only to get (for me) sloppy looking stitching.
Your color choices are beautiful.
Love your baskets. Found you through facebook! It’s working!!!!
where can I find your crazy-patch basket pattern? I followed the link and couldn't find it…?
thanks so much!
Hi Denise,
My guild keeps the BOM patterns on their website for two years, so now my baskets are no longer available there. Let me know if you'd like me to email the pattern to you.
