wip wednesday #7

On New Year’s Day I started a scarf. I’ve finished 17 1/2 inches out of 60. The bulky yarn crochets fairly quickly. I think I’ll finish it before the winter is over!
I’ve never used this type of yarn (Bernat Bling Bling) before. What’s interesting is that the scarf looks identical to the ball of yarn. You can’t really see what you’re doing. That’s both good and bad! Good in that you can’t see mistakes, bad in that you can’t really see where to place the stitches so I often come out with more or less stitches than the 17 you’re supposed to have in a row. I have to count them as I stitch because it’s hard to count after the row is completed. (I would rather rip the row out and start again than try to count the stitches!)

When I first started I made a row with too many stitches that wouldn’t come out. The baubles knotted it up, so Scooby got a fashionable accessory. Now I make my stitches a bit looser and haven’t had a problem removing errant rows.

Finally here are some sketches that I made for the January 12x12x12 Portfolio challenge. While I do like them, I’ll probably file them away for another time, and simplify for this month’s project. I think I’ll continue experimenting with the technique I used in Goodnight, Moon. It would be nice to start the year off right by actually meeting my first deadline (which BTW is January 15. Thank you Sande for the extra 3 days!)

  1. I agree with you about the novely yarns. I have done little knitting with them because it’s so hard to tell what you’re doing. But then I’m way over knitting anyway!

Just wanted to tell you that I have been thinking about a coffee cup design for the next week’s fast collage challenge that Kim does. This fits in the “daily life” theme. (This isn’t the same as the Fast Friday you do, is it?) Don’t let that affect you, please. I can already tell that yours will be better–mine will definitely be just a play around thing. But just wanted to say this now, since they’ll come out about the same time (if I actually don’t decide mine is too stupid.) Great minds in the same channel, I guess. :)

  2. Lovely sketch – should make a wonderful little quilt.

Kay! No such thing as too stupid! I know some at least one of my Friday Collages will have an Americano featured!

  3. I wondered that about the novelty yarns and have put them back on the shelf at the store. I like the straightforward yarns better (ultimately) that show the nice stitches.

Glad you are in the 12x12x12 with us!

  4. I crocheting with the novelty yarns, but I wouldn’t enter anything I’ve done into a judged show! I don’t knit at all.
    Your scarf is looking lovely!

Love the coffee cup designs. I don’t know if I’ll even get to do the 12×12 challenge. I feel like I’m falling behind already!

  5. Hi Kay,
The Fast Friday is a different challenge, once a month. I think Kim’s is weekly.

I agree with Kim! I’m sure it won’t be stupid at all. I think it’s great you’re doing something similar. I love to look at all the different ways people interpret the same subject. I can’t wait to see yours.

  6. As a very basic knitter and crocheter I love the new yarns, you can never see if Ive drop a stitch or made a mistake lol

  7. Oh, that coffee cup has such possibilities! I will be interested to see what you do for the first one. I’m only going for 4. I know me!
